Trade NL – ArmeniaThe policy adopted by the Government of the Republic of Armenia for foreign trade was directed towards the principle of promoting liberal foreign trade, establishment of a more favourable field for businesses as well as to the stimulation of export of domestic goods.
Armenia became a full member of WTO in February 2003 and has benefited from a Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) when trading with the EU, USA, Canada, Switzerland and Japan, Poland and Estonia. The EU is presently undertaking a feasibility study into the opportunities for a FTA between Armenia and the EU.
The growth in imports exceeded the growth in exports, resulting in a trade deficit of 514 million USD in the first half of 2006 compared 353 million USD in the first half of 2005.
For the first time, the export of products expressed in USD exceeded 1 billion USD in 2006.
The imports surpassed the borderline of 2 billion USD.
