The Netherlands supports further reforms in Georgia
The Netherlands supports further reforms in Georgia in regard to democracy, the rule of law and the economy. This was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen in The Hague following a meeting with his Georgian counterpart Grigol Vashadze.

‘The Netherlands will advise and assist Georgia in this reform process,’ said Mr Verhagen. ‘A democratic and prosperous Georgia increases the likelihood of reunification with the breakaway regions and can also be a stabilising factor in the Caucasus.’

In August 2008 an armed conflict broke out between Georgia and Russia over the secessionist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The European Union was able to broker a ceasefire, and the parties are now engaged in negotiations on regional stability.

In his talks with the Georgian foreign minister, Mr Verhagen once again emphasised the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. The Netherlands is opposed to recognising the independence of the breakaway regions.

Later today, Mr Vashadze will attend the opening of the exhibition Gold from Georgia: the Myth of the Golden Fleece at the Drents Museum in Assen.
